The 2009 Honda Fit ranked ninth among the top ten “clunker-buys,” and it’s not surprising why. It boasts a very respectable fuel economy rating, clever interior design and nimble handling. The Honda Fit is one of the most accommodating sub-compacts around.

Small Car, Big Benefits

Don’t be fooled by the Fit’s diminutive exterior – the car is more practical than it looks. It is actually 4.2 inches longer than the previous model, providing added room for rear passengers. Also, you no longer need to take out the rear headrests to fold the rear seats down for additional cargo space.

The Fit also benefits from improved body rigidity and suspension updates, which enhance handling. Better still, Honda claims that the new body structure has improved the car’s crash safety.

Under the hood, the Honda Fit is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Although the specs are the same compared to last year’s model, the 2009 model has an improved version of the i-VTEC variable valve timing, producing a slightly improved 117hp without sacrificing on fuel economy.

Cons

The only drawback of the new Fit is its price tag. For some, the MSRP of the Honda Fit may be a little too much for a sub-compact vehicle, even with all its superior features.

Final Thoughts

If you’re talking about quality, there’s no question about the sub-compact Honda Fit. Its main dilemma, however, is its price, which some people may find quite high for its class. The “cash for clunkers” program could solve that dilemma for you, especially if you can qualify for the $4,500 voucher. For people with a clunker to trade in for an economy car, the Honda Fit is worth checking out.
