The 2009 Hyundai Elantra is a compact sedan economy car that proved to be one of the popular buys in the “cash for clunkers” program. It ranked seventh among “clunker sales.”
A pleasant surprise
In the past, Korean cars weren’t given the time of day. But that generalization no longer carries weight especially with the introduction of the 2009 Hyundai Elantra.
The Elantra compact sedan is very spacious, with acceptable legroom and headspace in the rear seats. Taller drivers won’t find the usual cramped feeling they get with other cars of the same class. But aside from cabin space, the trunk and storage compartments also provide decent room for your things.
The quality of the interior is also impressive. True, there are some noticeable plastic parts here and there, but they aren’t enough to ruin its attractive and pleasing ambiance. It doesn’t feel like an economy car from the inside.
Of course, looks aren’t as important as the ride quality. Thankfully, the Elantra provides a smooth and secure ride, with negligible wind and road noise.
And let’s not forget about its generous fuel economy rating, courtesy of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces a respectable 138hp and 136 pound-feet of torque.
Cons
138hp isn’t that powerful. Don’t expect an exciting and responsive driving impression. Also, engine noise can get quite loud north of 3,500rpm.
Final Thoughts
The 2009 Hyundai Elantra is a pleasant surprise. It’s an economy car with a well-crafted and spacious interior. It’s a bit bland to drive, but then, it’s not for racing anyway. It provides a good balance between fuel economy and practicality.
