Checking your tires is one of the most important, yet overlooked, car maintenance tips. Some people don’t realize it, but properly maintaining your tires can significantly improve your savings aside from save your life.

Tires keep your car under control

Think about it. You hit the gas pedal, step on the brakes, turn the steering wheel and you expect your car to respond the way you want it to. None of these actions would be possible if your tires didn’t have sufficient traction on the road. If one of your front tires suffers a blowout, do you think you’ll be able to keep your car running in a straight line, hit the brakes gently and roll to a stop before you crash?

Maintaining your tires minimizes the risk of costly accidents.

Tire Maintenance Tips

Check the tire treads – Check the treads of your tires every now and then. Make sure that your tires have sufficient tread depth. Worn out tires are usually prone to a loss of grip (especially during wet conditions) and damage. When you’re traveling 70 mph on the freeway, a damaged tire can result in catastrophe.

If your tires are badly worn, don’t hesitate to spend for new tires. Buying a new set of tires is certainly much cheaper than getting into an accident.

Rotate your tires when needed – It’s a good habit to rotate your tires every 3,000 to 4,500 miles. Tire rotation simply means swapping the front and back tires accordingly so you can even out the wear on your tires (thereby maximizing their usable lifetimes).

Check tire pressures – Remember to check tire pressures every week, at least. Underinflated tires affect your car’s fuel economy significantly. Overinflated tires, on the other hand, make your tires prone to unexpected blowouts, especially during warm road conditions. Keep your tires properly inflated to money on fuel and improve your safety.
