With high gas prices and diminished buying power for most consumers, automakers are looking for ways to attract new customers. Ford is relying on its new driver interface system, called the MyFord Touch, which aims to help drivers save fuel.

MyFord Touch will provide real-time information drivers need for more fuel-efficient trips. Unlike other navigation systems that focus on the shortest or fastest route, MyFord Touch provides drivers the option to select the eco-route, which directs drivers to roads with the least congestion. A traffic-free trip allows the driver to maintain ideal speeds that can maximize the vehicle’s fuel economy.

Fuel efficiency comparison when using the MyFord Touch

Test runs show that the MyFord Touch’s eco-route helped increase fuel efficiency by 15%. That could potentially add up to 22 billion gallons of fuel saved each year.

In addition, the MyFord Touch will also integrate the SmartGauge featured in the Milan, Fusion and MKZ hybrids. SmartGauge calculates the fuel consumption of drivers and displays a plant growing or losing leaves depending on how economical a person is driving. Ford stated that based on their studies, simply making drivers aware of how they’re driving increased efficiency.
This system will debut on the 2011 Ford Edge and then globally on the 2012 Ford Focus. Moreover, Ford also says that the MyFord Touch will eventually be included in any Ford car with a navigation system.
