The cash for clunkers program may have ended, but people are still looking for new cars with better fuel economy ratings.
However, a good fuel economy rating is no guarantee that you will meet EPA estimates. Much of maximizing gas mileage is up to your driving habits. If you want to meet fuel economy EPA estimates, make sure to keep these driving tips in mind.
- Be sensible – Fuel economy and MPG ratings by the EPA won’t matter if you have “lead feet.” There is no need to be aggressive with the gas pedal. The more you step on the gas, the more fuel you consume. Be gentle on the gas when you accelerate from a stop. And once you see a red light, it is better to slow down sooner rather than later.
- Follow the speed limit – The speed limit is set at 60mph in many areas, and that is a good thing. Fuel economy decreases rapidly at speeds over 60. If you want to maximize your car’s gas mileage, it wouldn’t hurt to follow the speed limit.
- Avoid idling as much as possible – When your car is stopped and the engine is running, you’re essentially doing 0 MPG. If you’re waiting for someone in the grocery or at home, it’s better to turn off the engine first. Don’t switch it back on until the person has entered.
- Take advantage of cruise control or overdrive gears – Your car may provide fuel saving features like cruise control and overdrive gears. If so, make use of them.
- Weight matters – This is especially true in smaller cars. Remove unnecessary extras loaded in the trunk of your car. The heavier your car, the harder the engine has to work. You’ll end up spending more fuel.
