With Memorial Day Celebrations and summer just around the corner, many people will be travelling to their holiday destination. Statistics show that most people travel by car, covering more than 50 miles.

When driving long distances, be sure that you’re not spending more than you should on fuel prices, especially now that gas prices are somewhere around the $4-per-gallon mark. Here are some fuel economy tips when you go on road trips:

Travel Light – Statistics show that an extra 100 lbs. reduces your car’s fuel efficiency by 2%. If you want to keep your car as fuel efficient as possible, you should travel light. Think carefully on what you really need. This should help you avoid packing unnecessary stuff.

Check Your Tires – Tire pressure affects your car’s fuel efficiency. Be sure that your tires are at their optimum pressure settings as indicated by your driver’s manual.

Plan Your Trip – Carefully planning your trip can help avoid unnecessary (and sometimes spontaneous) errands that will waste fuel.

Park Your Car and Avoid Idling – Long road trips usually mean frequent trips to the drive-through. However, waiting in line and taking your order takes time. People stuck for 15 minutes in the drive-through consume an extra quarter-gallon of gas. If you want to save gas, park your car instead.

Follow the Speed Limit – Speeding wastes fuel. Anywhere north of 60mph and your car’s fuel efficiency begins to decrease. Always follow the minimum allowable speed limit to burn the least amount of fuel during your trip.
