Here are some budget control tips that you can use as a form of debt relief and elimination, if you feel you have been trapped in a cycle of interest payments and monthly fees.
Make a list, check it twice
Make a list of your debts, using the following as the framework:
- Credit card and debt on it
- Outstanding balance
- Regular monthly payment
- Minimum payment amount
- Interest rate
- Remaining payments
- Estimated payoff date, given regular payments
Remember to list your debts from the least amount to the largest. This way, you are performing a form of debt consolidation, as you calculate how to pay all these debts in the best way possible.
Little steps
Start with the smallest debt, and then pay it off as fast as you can, holding off on the larger debts (with minimum payments, if feasible). Once that debt is paid off, you can then spread the allocation that you were using for the smallest debt to the others, with a large share of it for the next smallest debt. Once that debt is paid, you can do this cycle again. For some people, what would have taken 30 years to pay, they can pay off in ten years or so using this payment approach.
Extra cash
Your personal debt relief, consolidation and relief efforts will be greatly helped if you live smart. Energy conservation efforts, such as responsible use of house utilities, walking instead of driving short distances and even using hand tools instead of powered ones can give you extra cash at the end of the month through cheaper utility bills. This also goes for water conservation efforts, and even diet control. That cup of coffee you buy from your favourite coffee shop shouldn’t be a habit when you can bring your own coffee. Don’t think about these budget control tips as scrimping – it’s more of responsible and healthy lifestyle changes that affect not only your cash flow, but your well-being, too.
Seek help if you have to
Sometimes even if you do all that, you will still need help in controlling your debt. If that is the case, then it’s time to talk to debt relief and consolidation specialists. While it may feel like a failure on your part, think of it as a lesson that will benefit you in the end.
