Everybody has their own reasons for using (or not using) credit cards. You may be using credit cards because you find it a necessity for emergencies, or think the “rewards” are enticing. Or, you may be against credit cards, probably because you or someone you know has been in credit card debt before.
Here are some credit card tips to help you manage your finances, avoid credit card debt, and get the most out of your credit card:
1. Don’t ever think that credit cards equate to “free money” – If you don’t have tangible cash in the bank, you don’t have the money to pay your credit card bills.
2. Take advantage of 0% credit card offers if you are in debt – Here are two basic tips for paying off credit card debt:
- Use credit cards that offer 0% for balance transfers in order to reduce the amount you owe.
- Never make the mistake of failing to pay your credit card on time.
3. Pay off the card in full every month or due date – Be sure to pay off your card in full each due date. No matter how small the credit card rates are, paying interest on monthly charges will only lead you to credit card debt.
4. Get a card whose “rewards” match your wants and needs – There are many credit card offers that cater to different people. For example, there are cards that give frequent flier miles, or cash rebates. Look for what you really need.
5. Practice self-control – No matter how big your credit limit is, use only around 10% of your credit limit. Remember that having a higher credit limit and more credit cards will only tempt you to spend more.
