Extending your budget from the food stamp program can be a challenge when food prices are affected by a bad economy. The good news is that there are creative ways to make the most out of your electronic benefits transfer (EBT) funds. According to the most frugal shoppers, coupon stacking is an effective way to stretch those food stamp dollars.

What is coupon stacking?

Coupon stacking is a way of using multiple coupons for one single item. For instance, you can clip coupons from the Sunday paper, print out another one from a coupon website and then combine them with a coupon from your local grocery. Finding the right combination can dramatically reduce the prices for specific items.

For instance, if a wholesale grocery sells two-pack bundles of your favorite cereal and offers a coupon for that, clip it. However, before purchasing the bundle, look for other coupons for that brand of cereal in the Sunday papers. Find two of those (one for each box) and then combine it with the bundle coupon to increase your savings.

Of course, it takes effort to find the right combinations of coupons. For effective coupon stacking, collect coupons regularly. Compare the coupons you have with your grocery list. See if you can come up with useful combinations.
Remember, use the coupons based on what you need to buy. Do not purchase things just because you have coupons. Make coupons work for your benefit and not the other way around.
