Emergency SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), also known as the Expedited SNAP, are food stamp benefits that are available in five days or less from the date you applied. Expedited food stamps are very helpful for people facing significant financial problems and are in desperate need of immediate food assistance.
You may be eligible for Emergency SNAP if:
- Your gross monthly income plus any cash that you have on hand or in the bank is less than your rent plus your utilities.
- Your gross monthly income is less than $150 and any cash that you have on hand or in the bank is less than $100.
- You earn your income from migrant or seasonal farm work and any cash that you have on hand or in the bank are less than $100.
You have to contact your local DTA office (Department of Transitional Assistance) to apply for emergency food stamps. During the application process, applicants must present valid identification. Most offices prefer photo identification but they are willing to accept other forms of identification.
Emergency SNAP benefits last only for a month. After that period, you will need to apply for regular food stamps to continue receiving food assistance.

I applied for food stamps at my local county office on 12/2/2010.They said i was not eligible for expedited food stamps,i don’t agree i had some back child support that totaled 200.00.thats all i had to my name,my son is ten years- old we live with my mother. She is on a fixed income she cant afford to feed me and my son on her income.I have been waiting a month for an answer.I know the guide lines of the program says it can take up to 30 days but that is too long we need food now!I don’t understand why I was not eligible for emergency food stamps.

Hi Kimberly,
It is the state that decides whether you are eligible for expedited food stamps. If you were not considered, there is a reason for that. As is usually the case, they prioritize people who are much more in need than you.
In any case, there are alternatives to food stamps if you really need assistance now. Try contacting food banks near your area. Try this link for an easy search:
