Just how bad has the weak economy hit the American people? According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 39.68 million, or one out of eight Americans, are receiving food stamps. Moreover, the USDA expects enrolment for the food stamp program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to average around 40.5 million this fiscal year, which ends September 30. The estimated cost will be up to $59 billion. For the fiscal year of 2011, average enrollment is expected to increase even further to 43.3 million people.
Times are indeed tough and the government is doing all it can to provide much-needed assistance to struggling citizens. In some places, SNAP guidelines are even being modified to fit the current economic landscape. These days, “people in need” don’t just include the homeless and the destitute. A person with a job, a car or a house can still be eligible to receive their food stamp EBT card.
Hence, if you are facing financial difficulties, do not hesitate to apply for food stamps.
