If you want to apply for the food stamp program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), don’t call the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) headquarters. They aren’t the ones who handle applications. You have to contact your local SNAP office for processing.
For those who want to apply online, remember that only some states currently allow you to apply online. These are:
Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin
Keep in mind that each state has its own application form, and that program guidelines may vary. In most cases, you have to meet income and asset limits to qualify for the food stamp program. These limits are based on your household size. In some states, the limits may be extended if some members of your household meet specific conditions. Disability and being over 60 years of age are some conditions that can extend the limits.
If you qualify, you’ll be issued a food stamp EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card. The EBT card acts like a debit card, and can be used at compatible ATMs or PoS machines in participating establishments.
Each month, your qualified benefits amount will automatically be added to your account. Any unused benefits in the current month will simply be carried over to the following month.
