Stretching your food dollars can be quite a challenge these days. However, with good grocery budget planning, there are practical ways to extend your food stamp dollars.

Don’t rush

There’s no need to spend your monthly allowance is soon as it is put on your Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. The money in your food stamp EBT card won’t expire. Unused funds will be carried over to the next month.

Before going to the grocery, plan what you need for the week. Create a menu for the week that will give you an idea of what to buy. Write a list and stick to it. Impulse buying is usually the main reason for overspending.

It would also be good to plan your list with sales ads from your local store in mind. Buying products on sale will minimize food costs. You should also make use of coupons. Some people may find collecting them tedious, but the savings are well worth it.

Shop smartly

Shop smartly to minimize your expenses. Choose private labels over branded items. Look for products with minimal packaging or processing. For instance, boned-in chicken will be sold cheaper than the boneless varieties.
Look at items closer to the ground, since expensive items are usually placed at eye-level.

Timing is important when you shop. For example, if you’re planning to shop in farmers’ markets, the best bargains are usually found towards the end of the day.

Although the food stamp program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is a federal program, it is run by state or local agencies. You must call your local SNAP office and tell them that you want to apply for food stamps. Usually, you will need to file an application form, have an interview and verify important info such as income and expenses. Your eligibility will be determined based on the details you’ve provided.
