Many people have had difficulty paying rent because of rising living costs. Here are some tips that can help you out with your expenses:
- Pay your bills on time. Late payment charges may not seem like much, but as it accumulates over the months, or when you are saddled with multiple late charges, you may end up spending thousands of dollars a year on penalties alone.
- Pay only for what you really need. This applies to your groceries, cable channels, phone bills and even your Internet connection. Don’t overstock on non-essential food items. See if buying or renting DVD’s cost less than paying for premium cable channels that you only get to watch a few hours a day. If you communicate more through your cellphone and the Internet, maybe it’s better to get rid of the telephone. Finally, if there are multiple Internet providers in your area, get the provider offering the cheapest rate.
- Figure out your real living space requirements. Take into account the size of your living space, and its location. You may end up saving more if you can move to a smaller apartment that’s closer to where you work. On the other hand, you may be able to get a lower price on a place that may be farther, balancing well with your gas consumption. Think about efficiently using space. The more you can make do with less space, the better for your rent payment planning.
- Weatherize your place. Have your residence audited for energy efficiency, and then weatherize it accordingly. Home savings usually take a big hit in the colder months.
The purpose of all this, of course, is to make sure you have enough to pay the rent and even have savings. Call it “tightening your belt,” but you’ll find out that you’ll be able to live in reasonable comfort by cutting back on expenses that you can do without.

[...] Savings – Face it, you can save much more if you’re renting rather than worrying about a house and all the maintenance that goes with it. [...]
