housing-1If you feel you have nowhere else to go, then it’s time to think about public housing. Here are details you may find useful about the public housing program.

Information

Public housing is for those who are in the low-income or very low-income brackets. Many public housing types exist, from single-family houses to cheap condominium units. This program is under the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and is locally handled by Public Housing Authority (PHA) or HUD offices.

Qualifications

To be eligible for public housing, you should meet the following guidelines:

1) Annual gross income – Low-income limit is generally set at 80% of the median income for the local area, and very low-income qualification is set at 50%.

2) Status as an individual or as a family – Being elderly, having disabilities or having family members who are one or both of these influences what terms you will be given.

3) Citizenship and immigration status – You have to be a U.S. citizen or qualified immigrant.

4) Other guidelines – The PHA must determine if you will fit well in the local public housing community. There may also be local directives that the PHA must follow.

Application

If you feel that you need to take this option, then you can apply for a public housing voucher at the nearest PHA or HUD office. Make sure that you provide them with all the documentation they need, for smoother processing.
