Over 2 million people now get Housing Choice Vouchers, which guarantee that you won’t have to spend more than 30% of your income on rent.
As an example, if your income (from all sources) is $1,250 per month, you’ll pay 30% ($375) of that for rent, and the government will pick up the rest. Once you get a voucher, you can live anywhere you want in the country.
Homeowners are already getting government assistance to pay their mortgage (in the form of a tax break on their monthly payment) . Renters also get government help to pay their rent. It’s called Housing Choice Vouchers, the new name for Section 8.
And no longer do people using vouchers have to live in public housing. Rather than isolating people in high-rise public housing towers, you choose where to live, meaning you can find a community with lower crime, better schools and other factors that make life more pleasant.
People using Housing Choice Vouchers are also helping lift the housing market, and the country out of recession. Landlords are buying up decrepit , foreclosed homes and then renovating them and renting them out to people using vouchers. The landlord is assured of collecting the rent each month – from the government, and tenants get a nice place to live.
There is even a website set-up to find available apartments in your area….

Hello, Cheryl!
The sign up is over at the top right side of the page. Now, you should get in touch with the local PHA’s (Public Housing Authorities) in the place you plan to move to, to find out if you can transfer your vouchers over to them. It would be best to talk with your current and your possible future PHA offices to see to it that your voucher is transferred in time, if allowed.

I live in Perth Amboy, NJ, my daughter is in a mommy & me program now and will be moving out of this program to a transitional housing program. She is having a hard time trying to find a place for her & her son that is six years old. She applied to a program in Somerset, NJ, they said there are no openings. The next options are Jersey City or Newark. We would prefer a better area for them, can you give us some transitional places in New Jersey for them. DYFS is also involved. She is doing very well for the past 4 months, I am desperate to find a safe place for them.

Hello Freida!
You must apply to a local PHA, or Public Housing Agency, to see if you qualify for housing vouchers. If you do qualify, then all you have to do is wait in line, so to speak, until your case is served.

I filled out the sign in and nothing happened. Website would not be displayed. My children and I have been waiting for four years to move out of my parents house. It doesn’t seem possible without some kind of assistance.I am currently in the Army National Guard and enrolled in school. Please contact me, we are so ready to have a home of our own again! Either email @ Fairynett@aol.com or call (225)588-9822
