other-expenses-1If you’re a practicing believer in energy efficiency, or would like to become one but don’t have the money, then you’ll be going green in the right way with the newly approved Home Star Energy Retrofit Act. With $6 billion in funding ready for use, this measure will provide rebates to homeowners who will incorporate energy efficiency as part of their house’s upgrades and upkeep.

How it works

The following will be the value of rebates, given the improvements made:

- Up to 50% with a maximum of $3,000 for insulation improvements and replacements for doors, windows and heating or cooling systems

- Up to 50% with a maximum of $250 for air sealing and insulation

- Up to $8,000 for homeowners who will do an energy audit on their homes and cut their home energy use by at least 20%

There are also some other programs involved, such as a $600-million grant program for mobile homeowners to replace pre-1976 mobile homes with new ones that have better energy efficiency. Also, homeowners who earn more than $250,000 a year will not be eligible for the program. Rebates will be given directly to homeowners.

Finally, qualified contractors are necessary for some of the rebates to apply. Do check with your local government offices for more information.
