Now that we’re getting into the crazy seasons, one way to prepare for possible natural disasters and other similar issues is to save up where you can.
FEMA guidelines – The first thing you should do if you know your area is prone to natural disasters is to check on local FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) guidelines. Depending on your area, there may be government funding ready to help you in case things get worse. Make sure you have the papers ready (and stored correctly) when you go into the scary seasons. Support can range from emergency shelter options to financing for rebuilding homes.
LIHEAP – No two LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) state programs are alike, so it’s best to visit your local government office to see if you qualify for the various energy assistance options. In some states, they combine local weatherization assistance programs with the state LIHEAP funding.
Section 8/Housing choice vouchers – Local areas may have variations on how they disburse Section 8 funding or housing choice vouchers. If you do qualify, make sure you have complete information on your healthcare situation, family and possibly tax concerns.
Energy Efficiency Tax Breaks – Buy products and appliances that are compliant with Energy Star standards. Find out if there are local tax break laws that can give you some reimbursements that can help your budget, such as the local version of “Cash for Refrigerators,” if it is still active.

For rent, you should try Section 8 or HCV assistance from your local HUD office. Assistance for your electrical utility bills is under the local state version of the LIHEAP or Weatherization assistance program. Food stamps are under the USDA, and the program is now called SNAP. Your local government offices or city or town hall should have all the guidelines and qualifications in order.
