With the cold weather breaking all records, it would be good to remember the following information.
In some cities, the 311 help line is already available. 311 lines are for non-emergencies, true, but they can help you with information and services that go beyond medical and police assistance. This may include information on the food stamp program, weatherization and insulation and possible shelters if it gets too cold for you and your family.
Now known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), food stamps can help you keep warm in the winter through a proper diet. If you are not eating balanced meals, your health will weaken, making you susceptible to a possibly deadly combination of cold-enhanced diseases and the low temperatures themselves.
Don’t just stockpile food – choose which foods will give you a more balanced nutritional diet. Stay away from frivolous food expenses and concentrate on the basics.
If you can, check to see if your place is fully weatherized. It’s not just a matter of energy conservation at this point, but a few degrees can spell the difference between being okay and needing assistance immediately.
Contact your local government offices for possible options concerning weatherization assistance. You can also inquire about appliance rebates – particularly useful if you wish to make sure that succeeding winter won’t catch you out in the cold.
Finally, be alert when it comes to your family and friends. Keep the lines of communication up, especially with your elder relatives or families with young children.
Sign up on the box at the right for more information on options you can use, such as the food stamp program and weatherization programs.
