liheap-2For some people, the recession seemed like the first of a one-two punch combination, what with worries about the coming winter. Weatherization itself can be expensive, but the added cost of natural gas and other utility payments during the extreme months can force low-income families to make difficult decisions. Fortunately, the federal government has funding in place to help people.

The American Gas Association (AGA) has applauded Chairman Obey and the House of Representatives for approving $5.1 billion dollars in funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The budget was included in the Labor, Health and Human Services Act for 2010. How the funding will be distributed is dependent on State government processes, but with the approved budget, more people will be expected to survive winter with less drain on their finances.

David Parker, AGA President and CEO, talked about the importance of LIHEAP: “When the weather turns cold, families who are already struggling to make ends meet must struggle even harder or risk the ravages of living with little or no heat.” He continued, saying, “With adequate funding, Congress can ease this situation and ensure these families stay on their feet financially, rather than fall into a dangerous downward spiral along with winter temperatures.”

About LIHEAP

LIHEAP helps low-income families pay for natural gas and other heating utilities during winter months. In temperate states, it can also be used for air conditioning costs. Some states add their own funding to LIHEAP, and may include weatherization services.
