Times are tough, and many job hunters are looking for positions that may be seen as a demotion from their previous job, just so that they can earn a steady flow of income. Unfortunately, many of these job seekers are disqualified simply because recruiters think they are overqualified for the job.

This can be frustrating, especially when you really want (and need) the job. However, there are ways of avoiding this dilemma. You only need to prove that you are a good fit for the position.

Important job fit advice: customize your resume

Read the job description first, and then tailor your resume around the job description. Emphasize that your skills meet every requirement. In doing so, you will be creating an impression of a good fit.

Aside from skills, don’t forget to include relevant work experience that addresses current company needs. It’s all about marketing yourself, so show them why hiring you will benefit them.

Of course, your previous salaries may be a problem, particularly if you’re willing to take a significant dip. Some hiring managers may disqualify applicants they consider too expensive. However, you should never lie about your previous work history and claim that you were earning less than you really did. It’s easy for them to verify your claims and if they find out that you lied, you will surely be out of the running.

The best way to tackle this dilemma is to avoid salary issues in your resume and simply include them in the cover letter. In your letter, provide them a wide range of salaries that you’re willing to accept.
