It’s easy for your career to slow down, now that more companies are freezing salaries just to cut costs and stay afloat. Workers affected by this growing trend could be left with little room for further career growth.

But these trying economic times shouldn’t prevent you from advancing your career. Sometimes, all you need is an online distance education program to improve your job outlook. It’s amazing how building on your career training value can open more doors for you.

In healthcare for instance, registered nurses (RN) who took up a two-year degree could pursue a BSN online to open up opportunities for supervisory, administrative and management roles. Moreover, RN’s may choose to take up a master’s degree in health care administration to qualify for more lucrative positions. A 2008 survey showed that health care administrators earned a median annual salary of over $80,000. That’s almost $20,000 more than the median annual salary of registered nurses.

Dental assistants can also pursue online distance education programs to qualify as a dental hygienist and earn higher salaries.

Aside from healthcare, IT is also a field where continuing education is greatly rewarded. Computer support specialists can add a degree in information science, computer science, management information systems or even an MBA with a focus on technology to qualify as a database manager. Top-earning computer support specialists earned salaries just under $43,500 – a far cry from the $69,740 median annual salaries database managers earned. In fact, top database managers have annual salaries worth over $110,000.

In Education, teachers may want to pursue a master’s degree in education to qualify for administrative positions and earn hefty salaries. Those who really love to teach may also take a special education degree along with certification. Special education teachers are in high demand, so salaries are also lucrative.

These are only few examples that highlight how continuing education improves your job outlook. Stay educated and keep up-to-date and you can expand opportunities for career growth.
