Most people assume that internships are for fresh college graduates. However, experienced professionals can use internships as a successful job-hunt strategy.

Pathway to a new career

Although experienced professionals may view internships as a “demotion,” internships can be a springboard to a new career, be it job openings in the same industry or if you’re looking to make a career change.

A ‘new job’ intern gets to be evaluated by a company first-hand. If they’re impressed by your skills and work ethic, you get to put yourself on top of the shortlist for new hires. The benefit also works both ways. As an intern, you get to evaluate the corporate culture and assess if you’re a good fit in that organization.

Even if the organization isn’t hiring new employees, your time as an intern won’t go to waste. You get to meet new people and expand your network of contacts. A good showing from you could lead to more referrals. Moreover, your work experience as an intern helps reduce unemployment gaps in your resume.

Spotting ideal internship opportunitiesĀ

Many internships aren’t advertised. Use your network to spot opportunities. Call the companies you want to check out and offer your services. In addition, your alma mater may also provide you with significant leads.

When offering your services as an intern, make it clear that you’re an experienced professional and that you can contribute much more than fresh graduates can. Ideally, you want internship jobs that revolve around specific projects where you can utilize your skills and work experience so you can bolster your resume.
