Job hunting can be an extremely frustrating experience especially if you’ve spent a long time looking for work. It becomes even more frustrating when you receive absolutely no response from HR days after you’ve applied.

Unfortunately, a “non-response” is slowly becoming the norm these days, and it’s not because HR personnel have suddenly become rude. The truth is that HR departments are overwhelmed with the number of applications they receive each day. Some departments receive hundreds of resumes for each available job opening. That can sometimes amount to thousands of applications each day.

Aside from a record-breaking number of applicants, many HR departments have also suffered the effects of company downsizing. The average number of HR staff these days is 9.2, down from 13 in 2007. Therefore, not only is HR receiving more job applications, there are also fewer staff members who screen these applications. To come up with a short email to respond to all the applicants will literally take ages. In this scenario, it will take more than just following resume format tips to get a response from HR.

To ensure that your resume will get its due attention, you must bypass HR entirely. Rather than send your resume to HR, it’s much better to send them to a company executive. Of course, you need to use your network to determine who the company executive is. However, the payoff is very good.

Company executives are likely to be very busy, and won’t have the time to browse through your resume. The initial reaction is to send your resume to the hiring manager of your desired position. As is usually the case, resumes handed down from the company executive is always given more attention by the hiring manager. If you’ve followed the tips for successful resume writing, you increase your chances of landing an interview.
