Recently unemployed professionals may feel awkward about becoming a “new” job intern again. But internships can be a launch pad to another career, be it a new job at the same industry or a transition to another line of work.
By becoming an intern, the company gets a chance to evaluate your performance first-hand, increasing your chances of being truly employed. Internships also allow you to learn and expand your experiences, giving your resume more value.
But even if you don’t land a job in that particular company, taking an internship position allows you to meet new people and expand your network of contacts. If your performance is good, you may find it easier to get referrals for other job openings.
Where to Find Internship Opportunities
Not all internship opportunities are advertised. Calling companies and offering your services can increase your chances of finding internships. Your alma mater’s placement office or career center may also be a good place to start.
Try to find companies that have the same goals, culture and values that you share. These companies will probably provide you the best opportunities for career growth should your internship leads to full-time employment.
