Whether you’re at work or taking up a training course, staying awake effectively is important. Most people resort to caffeine to stay awake. Unfortunately, caffeine is only good enough to keep your eyes open. It doesn’t improve the sharpness of your mind in times of heavy stress. Here are some effective ways of keeping your energy up without relying on caffeine:

Get enough sleep

Your mind needs sufficient sleep to work effectively. Treat sleep as an important activity, just like work. Make sure that you get at least six to eight hours of sleep. If you have to miss your favorite primetime or late night program to get enough sleep, it’s a sacrifice worth making.

A little music can help

If you’re feeling a bit drowsy while at work, you may want to put on your headphones and listen to some music. Listening to music can help your ability to concentrate, and that can lead to increased productivity. Try to figure out which type of music boosts your productivity. Some work best with classical music in the background, while others work best with rock.

Give your eyes enough rest

Staring at your computer screen for too long can give you headaches, blurred vision and fatigue. Be sure to look away from your computer every 30 minutes. Try looking out to the horizon for around 30 seconds to a minute, since distance vision can help your eye muscles relax.

Do some stretching

Sitting down in a cramped cubicle can give you stiffness and mild pains. Be sure to stretch occasionally.

Avoid heavy mid-day snacks

When you’re hungry, avoid stuffing yourself with junk food, as this can make you feel drowsy. Instead, try packing small healthy meals from home like fruits, vegetable sandwiches or some nuts.

Never forget the importance of water

Keeping yourself properly rehydrated throughout the day increases your oxygen levels, keeping your mind sharp and maintaining your energy.

If you’re feeling a bit drowsy, splash cold water on your face.
