In these tough economic times, it’s difficult to ask for higher salaries when looking for work. In fact, many have to settle for a pay cut just to find a new job. However, there are ways of maximizing one’s salary without asking for higher pay. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of being at the right place and time. Here are a few useful tips on how to maximize one’s salary:

  1. Location is important – There are places where certain professions are in greater demand. These professions tend to have higher salaries. Elementary and secondary teaching jobs, for example, have high salaries in Illinois, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, California and New Jersey. The difference in salary for teaching jobs in these areas compared to other states can reach up to $30,000 annually.
  2. Management positions make a difference – Working your way up to management is one sure way to maximize income. Pursue a master’s degree related to your chosen field to climb the corporate ladder.
  3. Choosing the right industry matters – Many professions are applicable in different industries. But some industries pay higher than others do. Research which industries offer the highest salaries for your chosen profession. Trainers for instance, receive high salaries in the performing arts industry.
  4. Look for jobs that pay by the hour – Sometimes, the highest paying jobs are those that pay by the hour. Jobs with hourly wages can offer “time and a half” pay for overtime work, and double-time pay during the holidays. These incentives, combined with regular benefits, can give you a hefty income. In addition, the top paying “hourly wage” jobs require only an associate’s degree or a certificate to qualify. The best examples include graphics designers, electricians, court reporters and dental hygienists.
