The rising numbers on student debt are becoming a problem. It’s not surprising, given the current state of the economy. With the unemployment rate hovering around 10% (some states, like Michigan, have unemployment rates that are at 14.6%), it’s difficult for a fresh graduate to find a job that can pay for the student loan debt by the time the six-month grace period ends. This is why it’s important for college students to minimize their overall debt. In case they can’t find employment within six months, at least their financial situation will still be manageable.

Live on cash

Despite the new credit laws, credit cards remain a major cause of compounding student debt. This is because many students don’t have a firm grasp of what credit really is. Many of these students get a false sense of wealth with their credit card. They end up purchasing more than what they can afford.

A cash-only lifestyle can help college students minimize their debt by the time they graduate. It may seem daunting to live only on cash. However, knowing that your resources are limited is precisely why it is good – it purges your impulse to overspend.

Key things to remember when living on cash

You must allocate your money to cover for all your obligations first, such as school supplies, groceries, travel costs and board and lodging (if applicable). Create a chart that lists your basic needs. Collect your old receipts and assess how much you spend on a weekly basis. Be sure that you have enough cash for your expenses.

If too much of your allowance is going to your basic expenses, you must find ways to lower your expenses. For instance, you may have to settle for cheaper brands found in the grocery, or you can cut down on junk foods altogether. Be creative and you will be able to minimize your costs.

Consider it a challenge to lessen your weekly costs as much as you can. When you do, you get to increase your savings. That’s always a good thing.
